Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Setting for National Lampoon's European Vacation

The goal of the assignment was to analyze the setting in the clip. The clip came from a scene from Lampoon's European Vacation. In the film, a family was taking a trip to England. I was able to determine this because of some of the codes I was able to find in the clip, such as one of the main characters driving on the left. This led me to believe that the location couldn't have been in the United States because in the US we do not drive on this side. As a matter of fact, it is the opposite. The time of the day was morning because if it was nighttime, there would be no sun outside, instead it would be dark. Moreover, people in the clip seemed to be either going to work or school, which is done notably in the morning.     I n the clip, people dressed very sophisticated. Natives were primarily in their dress clothes. This led me to believe that the location of the film was in Britain because it depicts how British people are perceived by others. Fu...

Preliminary Exercise 1: Barthes' Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs Semiotic Analysis Table

Semiotics, or semiology is how we study different signs in our culture. Semiotics can be used to help identify what a media text is saying. Semiology can be used for movies, books, and even photographs. Semiotics also refers to the process of communicating through media. The process of semiotics begins when the sender, or messenger encodes the message through the media text selected. Next, the receiver then decodes the message from the media text. Now, who was one of the pioneers of this form of analysis? The person we are talking about in particular is Roland Barthes, as well as is theory of semiotics.   Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist who believed that there was more than one way to analyze code. Barthes also believed that a text no matter what genre, has various meanings. Furthermore, he studied the relationship between connotation and denotation. If a meaning is denotative, then it's the literal meaning. For example, green grass indicates that t...

Preliminary Exercise 2: Semiotics

Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics   The movie we did this analysis on was   titled, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. This film talks about the events that occurs after the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Protagonist, Katniss Evergreen returns home after previously winning the Hunger Games. Throughout the film she that her and her fellow protagonist Peeta may have started a rebellion.   For this assignment me and my teammate analyzed a few visual and sound signs and the meanings each sign had. The scene we were looking at had people dressed in unique outfits. Most people like Katniss, dressed as animals in that scene. Katniss, for example dressed like a mocking jay. A visual sign I wanted to point out was the characters holding three fingers three fingers. This can symbolize many connotative meanings, such as a sign of respect or love. It was an interesting sight to see because people use this sign to indicate the number three, rather than a gestur...

Introduction to Media Studies: Defining My Media Consumption and Audience Engagement Film Case Study 1

The goal of the case study was for me to examine my media consumption and research how the film industry uses media convergence to promote their audience to consume the media form. In one part of the case study I had to review old vocabulary. I had to define what traditional (old) media and contemporary (new) media. I also had to define what convergence was and define the various forms it comes in. If done right, I score sixteen marks for this section. The picture is below.   One of the main portions of the assignment was when I had to give an example of a popular film and provide general information about it. I talked about the live-action film, Mortal Kombat , which was a reboot of the original movies. This movie came out in 2021. I talked about who was involved, how much money was made, and even how much money was being used. Towards the end I had to describe why the film was successful.   After completing the assignment, I got the chance t...

Welcome to My AICE Media Studies Blog!

Hello, this is Tyrone Daniel from Piper High School. I am currently enrolled in a Media Studies course that I am interested in learning in. During my time starting, I am learning that media studies is an important concept to learn about. Media is everywhere, whether it is on our phones, gaming consoles, newspapers, or magazines. We encounter it every day and it is important that we learn more about it. My favorite media product is a videogame named Killer Instinct, which is accessible for consoles and laptops. I play and enjoy this product because of the dynamic sound and colorful graphics. This can be attention-grabbing for teens because the visual is bright, colorful, and has a variety of characters that fit the demographic that people see today. For example, there are a variety of female characters and a few Native American characters in the game. Furthermore, I find a few things interesting about Media Studies. One interesting thing I found out about Me...
