Pre-Production: General Information About My Film

The title of the film is called "The AfterParty". We wanted to make a movie about students having a school party without jurisdiction. The genres of the film are supposed to be comedy and drama. We picked these two genres because these are the common genres associated with movies about high school students. I didn't want to be arrogant and give myself an extremely high rating, so I gave our film a 3.5/5. The theme of the film was that "if a friend is truly your friend, then they will help you no matter what you situation is. I apologize for the type errors in the picture above. If I had to pick four words to describe my movie then I would pick "funny, entertaining, dramatic, and relatable". Furthermore, I plan to release my film fall of 2024. I feel that that is an exceptional date for our movie to come out, as we would have to make a trailer, find a soundtrack, and finish the rest of the movie. This should be enough time for a complete film.

Pre Production: Company Logo

The name of our production company is Spinning Back Kick Studios. The name was originally made because the initial plan of the movie was to make an action film. But we changed the idea and decided to do a different film genre. However, we kept the name because we thought it would be funny to keep a name that has nothing to do with the genre. So...yeah the name was intentional. I hope it was funny to you too!!   We also talked about why we used the color orange. Well, orange represents flamboyancy and we intended on including a character that dressed in a charismatic manner. This is so the character(s) personality traits can be easily identified based on how they dress. Moreover, we used orange because we wanted a lighthearted approach to the film. However, we didn't want anything to colorful because we feared it may contradict what we were making.

Update on our Movie

I just wanted to provide an update about our movie. Me and my team wanted to change movie genres. We originally wanted to do an opening to a horror film. However, we decided to do a comedy film. We decided that it would be better if we did a genre that was more related to a black audience. Therefore, we did a movie that discussed financial issues, which is a common problem in many households. Also, we wanted to do something more lighthearted and comical as a way to get our audience's attention. You may even see a contrast in clothing styles between the characters. Overall, I hope to have better success with this genre. Wish us luck!!

Pre- Production: Storyboard

This is the storyboard of our film Healing. In the movie, a boy Robert goes through a depression after his friend goes missing. So, Robert has flashbacks about the events prior. The main element that we plan to use was flashbacks. We are planning to use a variety of camera shots, including an overhead shot, as well as tracking for camera movement.

Shot Sizes Slide Presentation

Before, we did a storyboard on shot sizes, which included drawings of what each shot size looks like. This time we had to utilize our photography skills to accomplish this. Honestly, while doing this me and my team had a tremendous amount of fun. We had a chance to talk to others and listen to their advice because they were older. Now, back to topic. Me and my team managed to capture different pictures representing each shot size. However, it took numerous attempts to accomplish this. In this slide, we used talked about master shots. In the shot, students were skipping class and hanging out. In the shot, all of the main characters were present in the shot. The genre of the shot was supposed to be a thriller. Moreover, it was filled with fear and suspense.   In this slide, we talked about a medium full shot. In this shot, a boy asked a girl to go on a date with him and she accepts. The character was immensely filled with joy. In the shot, the picture captured mos...

Camera Angles Slide PowerPoint Presentation

The last time that I did a post on camera angles, it was on a storyboard. Me and my team had to draw pictures of different camera angles. What makes this post different is that this time we had to take pictures and put them on a slide presentation. Me and my team had fun taking pictures and utilizing them in the most creative way possible. Moreover, in the process, we learned more about camera angles and their significance to film and photography, in general.   The slide above was about a low-level shot. We talked about the meaning and significance of a low-level shot. By the way, the person we used in the picture tried his hardest to not break character. The shot had to be retaken at least three to four times. Moreover, we used a story about a student bumping into a taller student as a way of making the shot make sense.   Moreover, in the slide above, we did an eye-level shot. In this slide, we talked about the meaning and significance of an eye-level shot. Moreo...

Camera Framing

   Crowd Shot Insert Shot

Research: Camera Framing Slide Presentation

On another assignment, me and my team did a storyboard on camera framing. On that assignment, we had to draw out what different examples of camera framing. What makes this assignment different is that we had to make a slide presentation. Moreover, in the presentation there were inclusions of definitions and purposes of the shots. The goal of the assignment was to show if we know what camera framing is and how does its elements contribute to a film's shot.   On the slide above, we talked about a point of view, (POV) shot. In the shot, a young boy is trying to draw a Chinese S because he believes it is actually Chinese. The shot was supposed to show what the character is looking at. Moreover, the character is looking at the paper he is drawing the symbol on. Furthermore, the genre of the shot is drama.   The shot above was an example of an over the shoulder shot. The shot is taken behind one of the characters to show the expressions on the other's face. Both c...

Camera Composition

 Leading Lines Shot

Research: Camera Composition Slide Presentation

Previously, I did a post talking about camera composition and what it is composed of. However, to show our understanding about the topic me and my team did a different assignment. Rather than drawing an example of what camera composition is, we took photos. With the consent of some students, we used multiple camera shots to describe what each element means, as well as giving action lines and context on what is going on.   The picture above was our example of a shapes shot. We gave a definition for what a shape shot is. We also described how shape shots are used and how they affect the people who analyze them.  Moreover, the action line for this shot referred to how the character felt after noticing that the stand is in the shape of a triangle.    On this slide, we talked about a rule of thirds shot. Just like the shapes slide we described how a rule of thirds shot can be useful. In the action line, the artist wanted to take a picture of the tree the...

Research: Sound

What is Sound?   Sound is simply everything you hear when you are watching a film. Sound can be as simple as a pencil dropping, or as complex as a portal opening. Moreover, sound allows a movie to feel pure and it can depict a character's thoughts and emotions towards the film's audience. The audience get's to look at the character and can tell whether or not the character is infuriated, depressed, intimidated, or joyous by just hearing their voice, or the audible music that could be played in the background. Different Sounds in Film   Different film genres have different sounds they are associated with. Horror films are usually associated with dark and gloomy music that allows the audience to be scared. There may be utilization of violins while the character is approaching their destination.    There are also diegetic sounds in film. These sounds are sound that both the character and audience can hear. The sound can typically be background noises in an environm...

Research: Lighting

Who doesn't like a film with a lot of lighting? When the light is shined on a specific character of object your attention is attracted to it. That isn't a bad thing. In fact, that means that the person in charge of directing the film's lighting is doing his job well. The goal of using the mise en scene element known as, lighting is to emphasize the importance the object of character. Without lighting, it would be difficult to figure out why and object as simple as a strand of hair is so important.   Proper lighting can also set the main character atmosphere in a film. When the lighting reflects of a character's face in the right angle, it gives them that feeling of relevancy within the film. It shows the character's dominance within the film. At the same time, it can demonstrate how lonely the character is too as well. It can show how lonesome the character is.

Research: Setting

What is Setting and It's Elements?   The setting of a scene, or frame describes the surroundings and atmosphere that is within it. Place and location are elements of setting that can easily show the audience where the film is taking place. For example, if the location was New York City you would see a code such as, the Statue of Liberty, which is a monument commonly associated with New York. The film's genre is another element of setting that can dictate the atmosphere. If a film was supposed to be an action movie, then the lighting would be predominantly dark; as well as, having a gritty mood.      Different time periods can play a crucial role in determining the setting of a film. If a film includes talking robots and flying boards. However, if a film included war helmets, metal armor, bloody swords, and gore then the film takes place during a medieval time period. Setting is one of the most recognizable forms of mise en scene. This is mainly becau...

Research: Costume

Costume is an important element of mise en scene that can show what the traits of a character are. With the proper costume, you will be able to tell whether or not a character is comedic of intimidating. You will be able to tell whether they are the protagonist or antagonist. Even the smallest details in a costume can help you identify the what the character is supposed to be. For example, you can tell someone is supposed to be a vampire if the character has sharp fangs in its mouth.   The person responsible for making the wardrobes are called costume designers. They are also assisted with producers because they provide the supplies for the costume. The director is also assists because he has to make sure the characters' personality fits the costume. The cinematographer somewhat assists with this as well, except they try to make the camera angles resonate with the character based on the costume. Also, without an intriguing costume how can the people involved expect to...

Research: Set Design

A set design is a major contributor to determining how and what tone is supposed to be set for a scene. If you want a gory and intense setting, then you are going to want blood, weapons, and possibly visible internal organs. Its disgusting to think about but it doesn't have to be a horror setting. If you want a more jovial setting, then you can make everything colorful and vibrant. Moreover, how a set is designed can determine the tone and mood of the film as a whole. Honestly, that is what makes set design so important. Without it, how can the viewers get a better idea of what is going on if there is just acting and no setting.   The person who is responsible for making set designs is called the set designer. Moreover, this person doesn't do this by themselves. Instead, they are assisted by an assistant scenic designer who helps them create the set in a scene. Producers play a part in supplying the designers with the necessary materials needed for the scene. Moreover...

Research: Acting

What is Acting?   Acting as one of the most important elements of mise en scene to analyze. How a character act can tell you what their personality traits are. In some movies you have characters like Geston, from Beauty and The Beast, who portrayed as a narcissistic character. You have people like Rocky Balboa, from the Rocky trilogy, who is portrayed as an earnest and driven character. Acting also allows the audience to relate to some characters, if the acting is done well.   The Rocky franchise if notorious for being a motivational film. The movie attracted people who felt like they were being physically and mentally defeated. As a result, the movies were deemed as classics and will always be cherished for its dramatic storytelling and gravitating character. Rocky Balboa started off as an underdog that wanted to improve his way of living. This attracted many middle-class media consumers who felt the same way. To me, Rocky is the perfect example of how impact...

Preliminary Exercise: Camera Movement Video Storyboard

In the storyboard, I worked with my teammates to produce a decent storyboard. I say somewhat decent because it came out better than we expected. When we started, we were on a mission. We knew what to do and how to do it. Therefore, everything was smooth and simple. First, we started by figuring out what movements we are going to be using. Then, we put them in the boxes and wrote our action lines. The last thing we did was our pictures. We drew them first, then we colored them the following day. Overall, it was a fun experience working with my teammates on a storyboard once again.

Preliminary Exercise: Camera Movement Video Blog Post

So, me and my team made practice videos to prep us for the film opening. We made several videos using the different camera techniques. The process was fun and we enjoyed every bit. We got the chance to communicate and understand how to effectively film each shot. However, my favorite was the tracking. We had to remake the video a few times because the hallway wasn't clear. Boom Action Line: A person sitting on the floor crying. Shot size: Full Shot Angle: Overhead Framing: 1 Dolly Out Action Line: The boy is having a flashback about his past trauma. Shot Size: Extreme Close Up Angle: Medium Close Up Framing: 1 Subject Pan Action Line: A boy running to the bathroom before class starts. Shot Size: Medium Shot Angle: Medium Shot Framing: 1 Subject Static Action Line: Two boys are arm-wrestling. Shot Size: Full Shot Angle: Medium Shot Framing: 2 Tilt Action Line: Two boys wanted to imitate an anime scene. Shot Size: Medium Full Shot Angle: Medium Shot Framing: 2 Tracking Action Line:...
